Glossary // 61 terms A–Z · QA10 + standard

Glossary. Because many terms mean five different things in five different firms.

Quick reference — short definitions with business application and a link to the full article where available. QA10 proprietary terms (AIP Audit, LSO:ATOM, Funding, TRL 9) are clearly marked.

A

ABC

Activity-Based Costing QA10

Cost accounting based on business activities

A cost analysis method that assigns expenses not to departments or products, but to the specific activities that generate those costs. Instead of asking "how much does the logistics department cost," ABC asks "how much does it cost to send one order from receipt to delivery."

Airflow

Apache Airflow

Workflow orchestrator for data engineering

An open-source platform for orchestrating data workflows. Airflow lets you define pipelines as Python code, then automatically run them on schedules with status monitoring, retry logic and a dashboard showing which step failed.

API

Application Programming Interface

The communication contract between systems

A set of rules through which one application can request data from another or ask it to perform an action. When an online shop displays a live exchange rate, its backend called the bank's API, received the rate and displayed it on the page.

Operational Audit

The classic form of business process diagnostics

A systematic review of a company's operational processes with the goal of identifying inefficiencies, bottlenecks and optimisation opportunities. A classic audit relies primarily on interviews and document analysis; a modern audit supplements these with Process Mining on system data.

PIA Audit

QA10

Process Intelligence Audit — QA10 proprietary methodology

QA10's proprietary methodology combining Process Mining, Activity-Based Costing and in-depth interviews into a single coherent diagnostic process. The PIA Audit answers three questions: where are the hidden costs in the company's processes, how much exactly do they amount to, and which automation option delivers the highest return on investment.

B

BPA

Business Process Automation

Business process automation

A broad concept covering the automation of repetitive business processes by any technical means — from Power Automate workflows through RPA to dedicated applications. BPA differs from RPA in scope: RPA is one of the tools within BPA, but not the only one.

Business Case

Investment feasibility analysis

A document justifying an investment, showing costs, benefits, a risk map and return on investment calculations. A good business case is not hype — it is a conservative summary of options with calculations of which has the highest net present value (NPV).

C

CRM

Customer Relationship Management

Customer relationship management system

A platform for managing client contacts, interaction history, the sales pipeline and team activities. Most popular: Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Sales.

D

Data Lake

Repository of raw-format data

A storage system holding all company data in its original format — logs, files, tables, documents, video — without prior processing. A Data Lake contrasts with a Data Warehouse, which stores filtered, report-ready data.

Data Pipeline

Automated data flow from source to destination

A sequence of automated steps that fetch data from sources (systems, APIs, files), process it (filtering, joining, transformation) and load it into a target system (data warehouse, report, model). A well-built data pipeline runs without human oversight and self-reports errors.

Data Warehouse

Centralised data warehouse for analytics

A centralised database optimised for analytics and reporting. It combines data from multiple source systems, normalises it to a single schema and makes it available to BI tools. Cloud solutions: Snowflake, BigQuery, Amazon Redshift, Databricks SQL.

dbt

data build tool

Data transformation tool for the analytics layer

An open-source tool for writing data transformations as SQL models with tests, documentation and a dependency graph. dbt doesn't load data (that's Airflow or Fivetran's job) — dbt transforms data already loaded into the Data Warehouse.

DEAN

QA10

Student services AI module of the MenToR platform

The digital student affairs assistant within the MenToR platform. It guides a case from submission (application, request, certificate) through data collection and decision recommendation based on regulations and the student's history, all the way to status communication. The student services officer approves the resolution — the decision remains with a human.

DevOps

QA10

Culture and practices connecting development and operations

An approach to software development in which the team responsible for writing code is also responsible for maintaining it in production. DevOps aims to minimise the time between writing a feature and it running in production, while maintaining system stability.

Dig.IT

QA10

ARP grant programme under FENG 2.21

An Industrial Development Agency programme financing digital transformation for Polish manufacturing SMEs. Budget: 140M PLN. Grants of 150–850K PLN, 50% co-financing, reimbursed after settlement. Next call: June 2026.

Digital Debt

Digital Debt

The hidden cost of outdated infrastructure

The accumulating cost of maintaining outdated systems, unrefactored code and temporary workarounds that were never removed. Digital debt means every scaling attempt is more expensive and slower than at a company with modern infrastructure, and the risk of errors grows proportionally with the age of the systems.

E

ELT

Extract, Load, Transform

Data architecture pattern

A newer data flow paradigm: data is first loaded raw into the Data Warehouse, then transformed in place. ELT reverses the sequence of classic ETL — it leverages the compute power of cloud warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery) for transformation instead of processing in an intermediate layer.

ERP

Enterprise Resource Planning

Enterprise resource planning system

Integrated software covering accounting, warehouse, HR and production and sales modules in a single platform. Most popular: SAP, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Comarch ERP XL, Odoo, Oracle NetSuite.

ETL

Extract, Transform, Load

Classic data architecture pattern

The classic data flow paradigm: extraction from a source, transformation in an intermediate layer, loading into the target system. ETL dominated the on-premise Data Warehouse era, when transforming before loading was the fastest way to avoid placing load on the target system.

Event-driven architecture

Event-driven architecture

A pattern in which systems communicate by publishing and consuming events rather than calling each other directly. When something important happens in one system (an order is placed, a payment is received), it publishes an event — other systems that are interested subscribe to it and react independently.

F

FENG

Fundusze Europejskie dla Nowoczesnej Gospodarki

FENG Operational Programme 2021–2027

The Polish operational programme financing R&D activities, innovation, digitalisation and green transformation in companies. FENG is the successor to POIR from the previous EU funding period. It has approximately €7.9 billion available for Polish enterprises.

FERS

Fundusze Europejskie dla Rozwoju Społecznego

FERS Operational Programme 2021–2027

The Polish operational programme financing human capital development, education, the labour market, social cohesion and accessibility. Under FERS there are actions that in certain cases allow zero beneficiary own contribution — for projects implemented under public procurement.

Financing

QA10

QA10 brand term — comprehensive access to external funding

QA10's proprietary methodology systematising the process of obtaining external financing for companies. Financing covers three phases: ecosystem scanning (EU, national, regional, sector-specific), matching (selecting the optimal path) and execution (application, evaluation, negotiation, management).

FORUM

QA10

Hybrid teaching module of the MenToR platform

Unified delivery of in-person and remote sessions in a single stream within the MenToR platform. Participants in both modes see the same materials, ask questions live and take part in polls regardless of location. Recording and materials are available after the session within the same environment. Attendance and engagement are visible in a single view.

G

GraphQL

Query language for APIs

An alternative to REST in which the client specifies exactly what data it wants from an API in a single query. GraphQL avoids the problems of over-fetching (REST returns more than needed) and under-fetching (REST requires multiple requests to gather the required data).

H

Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe

EU's largest research and innovation programme (2021-2027)

I

Integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS)

Integration Platform as a Service

Cloud platform connecting applications, data, and processes without custom code

Chmurowa platforma do łączenia systemów firmowych bez konieczności pisania kodu integracyjnego od zera. Najpopularniejsze: MuleSoft, Zapier, Make (Integromat), Workato, Celigo. iPaaS jest szybszą alternatywą dla budowania dedykowanego middleware.

Internal Rate of Return (IRR)

Internal Rate of Return

Discount rate at which an investment's net present value equals zero

K

Kaizen
