Free Website — Is It Worth It? The Truth About Free Website Builders [2026]

Wix, Squarespace, WordPress.com — is a free website enough for a business? The truth about hidden costs and limitations of free website builders.

Free Website — Is It Worth It?

“Build a website for free in 5 minutes” — that is the promise made by Wix, Squarespace, WordPress.com and dozens of other platforms. It sounds attractive, especially for startups and small businesses just getting started where every penny counts.

But what is actually behind the word “free”? What are the realistic costs of running a business on a free builder for 2–3 years? And when does a free solution genuinely make sense — and when is it a trap that costs you clients and money?

In this article I will answer those questions straight. I will show you data, numbers and realistic scenarios — so you can make an informed decision.

What Do Free Builders Offer?

Several popular platforms offer free plans for websites. Here is what users actually get on free plans:

Wix — the world’s most popular website builder. The free plan offers a drag-and-drop editor, hundreds of templates and hosting. Limitations: subdomain in the format yourbusiness.wix.com, Wix adverts on the site, 500 MB of storage, 500 MB of monthly bandwidth. No option to connect a custom domain.

Squarespace — only available as a paid plan (from $13/month), but offers a 14-day trial. There is no classic free plan — I mention it here because many users confuse the trial with a free option.

WordPress.com (not to be confused with WordPress.org) — the Free plan offers a subdomain yourbusiness.wordpress.com, 1 GB of storage, adverts on the site and limited themes. Custom domain integration, no adverts and full personalisation require an upgrade to a paid plan (from around PLN 50/month).

WebWave — a Polish platform. The free plan offers a subdomain yourbusiness.webwave.me, 100 MB of storage, WebWave adverts and limited features. Plans with a custom domain start from PLN 49/month.

Google Sites — a minimalist tool for creating simple pages, integrated with Google Workspace. Free, but very limited — mainly suitable for internal pages or educational projects.

The common denominator of all free builders: you get something that looks like a website — but it is a website on someone else’s domain, with someone else’s adverts, with someone else’s code that you cannot take elsewhere.

The Hidden Costs of a “Free” Website

A free website rarely stays free over the longer term. Here is an analysis of the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) over 3 years for various scenarios:

Cost itemWix FreeWix Business (paid)Custom site (Astro/WP)
Monthly feePLN 0~PLN 100PLN 20–80 (hosting)
Custom domainnone+PLN 50/year+PLN 50/year

PageSpeed mobile score40–6050–6575–95

First surprise: Wix Free costs PLN 0 over 3 years — but its real business value is equally close to zero. Adverts on the site, no custom domain and poor SEO mean this “site” does not bring in clients.

Second surprise: the paid Wix Business plan costs almost as much over 3 years as a professional website — but without the ability to export the code and with poorer SEO performance.

Third thing the table does not show: the cost of lost clients. This is the hardest to measure but the most important. A slow-loading site with competitor adverts and no custom domain loses clients before they have even read the first paragraph.

Limitations of Free Builders

Custom Domain — Absent or Charged Extra

Free builders offer subdomains: yourbusiness.wix.com, yourbusiness.wordpress.com, yourbusiness.webwave.me. For a private individual creating a hobby blog — fine. For a business this is a serious problem:

  • Lack of credibility — research shows that 63% of users provide their email address less frequently to companies without a custom domain. “Contact: info@yourbusiness.wix.com” signals that the company does not invest in professionalism.
  • Impaired SEO — Google treats a subdomain as a separate service. All the domain authority, external links and SEO history belong to Wix, not to you. If you ever decide to move, you start SEO from scratch.
  • No business email — without a custom domain you cannot have jane@yourbusiness.com. A free Gmail or Outlook address in business communication signals low professionalism.

A custom domain costs PLN 40–80 per year. That is the only right answer to this problem — but on a free plan you do not have it.

Adverts on the Site

Wix Free, WordPress.com Free and WebWave Free display adverts for their platform on your site. This means your potential clients see a “Create your website with Wix” banner or competitor logos — instead of focusing on your offering.

This is a fundamental conflict of interests: the platform monetises the traffic on your site by displaying adverts for its own products. You pay for this with a loss of control over the user experience and a loss of professional image.

No Code Ownership

This is the most serious limitation that is rarely stated outright. The code of a site built on Wix, Squarespace or WordPress.com belongs to the platform, not to you.

Consequences:

  • You cannot download the code and move the site to another host
  • If the platform raises prices, you choose: pay more or rebuild everything from scratch
  • If the platform goes bankrupt or is acquired, you lose your site
  • You cannot commission an external developer to modify the code

Vendor lock-in in free builders is complete and deliberate. This is the business model: attract with a free plan, create dependency on the ecosystem, then monetise through subscriptions.

Poor SEO (Wix: 0.06% of sites with >100 visits/month)

Ahrefs data is unforgiving: only 0.06% of sites built on Wix achieve more than 100 organic monthly visits. That is one in 1,667 sites. By comparison: sites on Astro achieve a 67% Core Web Vitals pass rate — and Core Web Vitals is one of Google’s ranking factors.

Why such poor SEO performance on Wix?

Firstly — technology. Wix generates pages with client-side JavaScript rendering. Googlebot handles this increasingly well, but still more slowly and less effectively than clean, fast-loading HTML.

Secondly — performance. Wix achieves a 44% Core Web Vitals pass rate (HTTP Archive data). This is better than WordPress (38%), but significantly worse than Astro (67%) or Next.js. A slow site = a lower ranking.

Thirdly — limited optimisation options. On the free Wix plan you cannot edit the robots.txt file, metadata optimisation options are restricted, and advanced technical SEO settings are inaccessible.

Vendor Lock-In

By choosing a free builder, you are not building a website — you are building a website on a platform. You are a tenant, not an owner. This has serious strategic consequences for any business planning a long-term online presence:

  • Subscription prices rise? Pay more or rebuild.
  • The platform changes its terms? Accept or rebuild.
  • You need a feature unavailable in the ecosystem? You have a problem.
  • You want an advanced integration with your own system? Often impossible.

Wix, Squarespace and other SaaS website platforms deliberately design their ecosystems to make leaving as painful and costly as possible. Rational from the platform’s business perspective — and rational for you to know before making a decision.

When Does a Free Builder Make Sense?

An honest answer: free builders have their place and are the right solution in a few scenarios:

Proof of concept and testing an idea. You have a business idea, you want to test whether there is demand before investing in a professional site. Wix Free or WordPress.com Free will let you build a minimal landing page in a few hours and research the market. Once you have validated your hypothesis — move to a professional solution.

Personal project, hobby blog. If you are blogging for pleasure, not for business, and you don’t need SEO or a custom domain — a free builder is perfectly adequate.

Temporary “coming soon” page. You launch in 3 months and want to collect emails from interested people? A free builder with a form is a sensible temporary solution.

Very limited budget, zero business requirements. If you are a freelancer or solopreneur who needs something to show clients and does not expect Google traffic — this solution may be sufficient in the short term.

Key word: short term. Every business that takes its online presence seriously as a client acquisition channel will sooner or later hit the wall of free builder limitations.

When Do You Actually Need a Paid Website?

A website stops being optional and becomes a necessity when:

You care about SEO and organic traffic. If clients need to find you in Google, you need a site with a custom domain, technically sound and with full optimisation capability. Free builders are a fundamental barrier here.

You have higher-value products or services. A client considering a purchase worth PLN 5,000–50,000 assesses your credibility through the prism of your website. A subdomain yourbusiness.wix.com and platform adverts on the page disqualify you in that segment.

You want integration with business systems. CRM, mailing system, payments platform, analytics tools, custom API — free builders have limited integration options and often require paid add-ons.

You are scaling your business. You are growing, you have more content, you need new pages, sections for different customer segments, multilingual support. Free builders have hard limits — both functional and in terms of performance.

You care about page speed. With conversion dropping by 4.42% for every second of load time, a site scoring 40–50 on PageSpeed represents a measurable loss of revenue.

Comparison: Free vs PLN 3,000 vs PLN 8,000 — ROI

The comparison below assumes a business that generates revenue through its website — e.g. a law firm, agency or B2B service provider.

Estimated additional revenue/yearPLN 0PLN 5,000–20,000PLN 20,000–80,000+

The numbers in the last row are of course estimates — they depend on industry, competition and content quality. But the logic is simple: a PLN 8,000 site that brings in 5 new clients per month at PLN 500 each pays for itself in 3–4 months. A free site that generates no organic traffic never pays back — because it brings in nothing.

An investment in a website is the only marketing investment that works for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for years — provided it is a site built on solid technical foundations with SEO in mind.

FAQ — Free Website

Is Wix Free enough for a business launch?

For an absolute start — yes, for a few weeks or months, to have something to show. But if you are treating the website as a client acquisition channel, Wix Free is a dead end: no custom domain, platform adverts on the site and poor SEO mean it will not bring you clients from Google.

What does Wix actually cost after upgrading to a paid plan?

Wix Business in Poland costs around PLN 80–130 per month (depending on plan and promotions). Over 3 years that is PLN 2,880–4,680 — plus any costs of additional apps from the Wix App Market. For similar money you can have a professional site in your own code that you can move and expand as you choose.

Can you move a site from Wix to your own hosting?

Not in the classic sense — you cannot download the code and move it. You can export some content (blog posts) and build a new site from scratch. For a company with a developed site this essentially means a complete rebuild. That is precisely why vendor lock-in in website builders is such a serious problem.

What technology should you choose instead of a free builder?

For a small services business — WordPress on good hosting (from PLN 50–100/month) or Astro/Next.js hosted on Vercel/Cloudflare (cheap, often from PLN 0–50/month). Astro is the best-performing option — 67% Core Web Vitals pass rate vs 44% for Wix. The choice depends on budget and functional requirements.

Does Google penalise sites on subdomains?

Google does not directly penalise subdomains of free builders, but it treats them as separate services — all the authority and SEO history belong to the platform’s main domain (e.g. wix.com), not to you. This means you are building SEO for Wix, not for yourself. Any platform change means starting from zero in terms of SEO.

Summary — Free Website

A free website is not a website — it is a playground with someone else’s adverts, on someone else’s domain, with someone else’s code. For a business that treats the internet as a client acquisition channel, it is a solution that costs more through missed opportunities than it saves in money.

The data is unambiguous: 0.06% of Wix sites achieve more than 100 organic visits per month (Ahrefs), 44% of Wix sites pass Core Web Vitals vs 67% for sites on Astro. This is not a coincidence — it is the result of fundamental architectural limitations of website builders.

A free builder makes sense for a proof of concept, a hobby project or a temporary “coming soon” page. For any business that seriously plans to acquire clients online, it is a trap on time and money.
