Operational Audit

The classic form of business process diagnostics

Definition

A systematic review of a company's operational processes with the goal of identifying inefficiencies, bottlenecks and optimisation opportunities. A classic audit relies primarily on interviews and document analysis; a modern audit supplements these with Process Mining on system data.

Business application

A CFO or COO commissions an operational audit when they sense the company is "choking" at a certain scale — revenues are growing but margin is declining or not growing proportionally. The audit shows exactly where money is leaking.
