Representational State Transfer

An architectural style commonly used for web APIs

REST, or Representational State Transfer, is an architectural style for distributed systems. Web APIs commonly use HTTP methods to work with resources identified by URLs, with stateless requests and a consistent interface. Not every API described as REST follows all REST constraints.

What it means for a business

An integration can use HTTP requests to retrieve an order, update a customer record or submit an action. Teams need to understand authentication, pagination, errors and versioning in the specific API; the REST label does not define those details by itself.
