A free website plan can be useful for a small experiment or a simple information page. It may also leave important business requirements unmet. The useful question is whether the available plan supports the task and what changes when the site grows.
Distinguish Free Plans, Trials and Open-Source Software
Hosted builders such as Wix, Squarespace and WordPress.com have their own plan structures and terms. A time-limited trial is different from an ongoing free plan. WordPress.org software is different again: the software licence does not provide hosting, maintenance or a complete website service.
Check the provider’s current plan pages before comparing prices or limits. Storage, custom domains, forms, commerce, advertising and export features can change; a historical comparison is not a current quote.
Questions to Test Before Building
| Area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Identity | Can you use and control a custom domain and appropriate email? |
| Content | Can the team edit, preview and recover changes? |
| Visitor task | Do forms, bookings or transactions work within the plan? |
| Presentation | Are platform adverts or branding acceptable? |
| Access | Can visitors complete the task on mobile and with assistive technology? |
| Growth | What usage, storage or integration limits trigger an upgrade? |
| Exit | Which content, media and configuration can be exported? |
Use a representative page and form for the trial. A template preview does not show how your actual images, content and integrations will perform.
Calculate the Whole Cost
Include subscription changes, domain renewal, email, paid extensions, content work and staff time. If a supplier builds the site, include handover and maintenance. Compare the same planning period and usage assumptions for each option.
A free plan does not automatically have no business value, and a paid custom site does not automatically produce enquiries. Measure whether people can find the information and complete the intended action.
Understand Rights and Portability
Distinguish rights in your content and uploaded assets from the licence to use the platform. Check export options, redirects, domain transfer and what happens when the subscription ends. Owning a domain does not mean you own the provider’s software; using a hosted platform does not automatically mean you lose ownership of all your content.
Performance and Search Need Testing
No platform guarantees a ranking or a universal Core Web Vitals result. Test the implemented site and review content, crawlability and mobile usability. A move to another platform needs a URL and content migration plan; it does not necessarily mean starting all search history from zero.
When to Move Beyond the Free Plan
Consider a paid plan or custom development when a required workflow, integration, editing process or operating arrangement cannot be supported reliably. Define the missing capability before choosing the replacement.
Working with Q-Dev
Q-Dev is QA10’s software house offering. Scope, price and schedule are agreed for each project. Four gates cover design, MVP, deployment, and training with the start of maintenance. Each gate has a review meeting and an agreed corrections document; after approval, two further rounds of changes to completed work are available at that gate. Changes may affect timing; price changes only outside the contract scope. The first six months of maintenance are included. Code rights transfer after full project payment.
Describe your website project.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a free website be useful for a business?
Yes, if its limits and terms support the specific task. Test the actual content and contact journey and plan for domain, service and growth requirements.
Do all builders have a free plan?
No. Providers distinguish free plans, trials and paid subscriptions differently. Check the current terms for the product being evaluated.
Can we move the site later?
That depends on the platform’s export options and your domain and content arrangements. Check these before building and plan redirects and migration if you move.
