A Small Business Website: Choose the Scope Before the Supplier

Plan a small business website around its main task, useful content, an editing workflow and a realistic operating budget. Compare suppliers using the same requirements.

A small business website should help the right visitor understand the offer and take a useful next step. It does not need to reproduce a large corporate site. It does need accurate information, reliable contact and someone responsible for keeping it current.

Decide What the Site Should Do

A service business may need qualified enquiries; a restaurant may need menu and booking information; a specialist shop may need transactions. Identify the main user task and how the website fits with referrals, marketplaces, social channels and offline service.

A website can support credibility and discovery without being the only sales channel. Do not assume its return can be calculated from page views alone. The ROI guide separates additional contribution from total revenue.

Choose an Appropriate Starting Scope

Starting pointWhen it may fit
Compact information siteA focused offer, location and clear contact details
Campaign landing pageOne audience and a specific action or campaign
Business site with publishing toolsSeveral services and an ongoing content owner
Transactional or custom workflowBookings, accounts, commerce or system integration

Choose from requirements rather than a package label. A blog without an owner can become an outdated section; a complicated form can create work instead of improving enquiry quality.

Prepare the Content

Explain who the service is for, what it includes and how to begin. Supply accurate company and contact information. Use photographs, logos, testimonials and examples only where you have the necessary rights and permission. A genuine account of the work is more useful than invented client results.

Make the next action clear and test it. If someone submits a form, they need confirmation, a useful error state and an alternative contact route when it fails.

Compare the Whole Proposal

Ask each supplier about scope, content, editing, integrations, acceptance tests, accounts, rights and maintenance. Review the same assumptions, tax basis and recurring services. A supplier type or low starting price does not establish the final cost.

For a limited budget, prioritise the core journey and defer optional features explicitly. Financing or instalments must be agreed with the actual provider; do not assume a website quote includes a particular credit product.

Plan Operation from the Start

Name the person who updates opening hours, services and contact details. Check domain renewal, hosting, backups, dependencies and support. Ask for a demonstration of a routine edit and a record of the accounts involved.

Measure whether the site helps the business task, then improve the specific obstacle. More animation or more pages are not automatic improvements.

Working with Q-Dev

Q-Dev is QA10’s software house offering. Scope, price and schedule are agreed for each project. Four gates cover design, MVP, deployment, and training with the start of maintenance. Each gate has a review meeting and an agreed corrections document; after approval, two further rounds of changes to completed work are available at that gate. Changes may affect timing; price changes only outside the contract scope. The first six months of maintenance are included. Code rights transfer after full project payment.

Describe your website project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every small business need a complex website?

No. Start with the main visitor task and the information needed to complete it. Add features when they solve an identified problem.

How can we compare suppliers with different prices?

Use the same scope and compare content, editing, integrations, testing, rights, maintenance and recurring costs, including the applicable tax basis.

Should we add a blog immediately?

Only if there is a useful content purpose and someone able to maintain it. An unused publishing feature is not a substitute for clear service information.
