WordPress software can be used under its open-source licence. That does not cover the work required to design, populate, secure and operate a business website. A useful budget separates the initial project from the services it depends on afterwards.
The Main Cost Components
| Component | What determines the work or charge |
|---|---|
| Design and development | Page types, custom behaviour, editing needs and integrations |
| Content | Writing, translation, photography, migration and entry |
| Themes and plugins | Licence terms, renewal, support and compatibility |
| Hosting | Resource needs, backups, environments and operational support |
| Maintenance | Updates, testing, monitoring, restoration and incident handling |
| Future changes | New content types, features and business requirements |
Check current prices from the relevant providers. A plugin’s promotional first-year price may differ from renewal, and one licence may not cover every site or environment.
Customisation Is a Separate Decision
A suitable theme can reduce initial design and implementation work. Extensive changes to a theme or page builder can add dependencies and make future updates harder. Ask which requirements are met by configuration and which require maintained custom code.
A custom design is not automatically more secure or faster. The implemented site needs testing with actual content, plugins and third-party scripts.
Model Total Cost over the Same Period
Choose a planning period and enter quoted build costs, recurring services, staff time and expected maintenance. Include a reasonable contingency for changes without presenting that contingency as a fixed supplier charge.
Check commercial-use terms, traffic or storage limits and what happens if a service is cancelled. Record who controls licences, domain and hosting, and whether another team can take over.
Compare WordPress with Other Options
A hosted builder may simplify some operation but constrain integrations or export. Astro or Next.js may suit particular publishing or application requirements, but still need dependencies, a content workflow and maintenance. Compare the same user task and operating responsibilities, not only a framework’s headline hosting price.
See the technology comparison for the trade-offs.
Plan Updates and Recovery
Specify who reviews updates, tests them and restores service if something breaks. Keep appropriate backups and verify restoration. Administrative access and unused plugins deserve regular review. There is no universal update interval or maintenance price suitable for every installation.
Questions Before Approval
Ask what is included, which subscriptions renew, who receives licence updates, which changes require development and what support covers. Agree acceptance based on functioning visitor and editing tasks, accessibility and performance under documented conditions.
Working with Q-Dev
Q-Dev is QA10’s software house offering. Scope, price and schedule are agreed for each project. Four gates cover design, MVP, deployment, and training with the start of maintenance. Each gate has a review meeting and an agreed corrections document; after approval, two further rounds of changes to completed work are available at that gate. Changes may affect timing; price changes only outside the contract scope. The first six months of maintenance are included. Code rights transfer after full project payment.
Describe your website project.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is WordPress free?
The software is available under its open-source licence, but hosting, development, content, optional paid products and operation have their own costs.
Are paid plugins always necessary?
No. Select them from requirements and assess quality, compatibility, support and licence terms rather than assuming more plugins improve the site.
Is another framework always cheaper to maintain?
No. Compare the full implementation, services and team responsibilities over the same period. Each stack needs an operating plan.
