Digital Debt

The accumulated cost of outdated digital practices

Digital debt describes the extra work and risk created by outdated systems, fragmented data and temporary workarounds. It can include technical debt in software as well as gaps in processes and skills. Its impact depends on how those constraints affect the organisation’s work.

What it means for a business

A company can assess digital debt by recording recurring manual work, integration failures, unsupported software and the effort required to make changes. Priorities should reflect measured costs and risks, rather than the age of a system alone.
